Roman Coliseum

We have seen some very cool things on this trip, but the Roman Coliseum is by far the most historically amazing thing I have ever seen. I could not wrap my brain around the number of people who had walked the same steps we did, in older times up to present times. Out tour guide said it is unknown how many men lost their lives in there, but it is guessed that it is in the 100's of thousands! It is quite disturbing to think of the horrors that happened there. I don't get why people would fill the coliseum to watch people and animals get killed, but it happened here....

The marble parts are original

The brick parts are restorations.

Vienna stood here and just stared at these guys, "what are you wearing??"

This was unearthed just 5 or 6 months ago! It's part of a horse and rider.

The cages were underneath the stage and people would be pushed up from bellow to fight either gladiators or animals... this was the Romans death row, many criminals died here.

Vespasian before 79 AD

Higher shot of the cells under the stage, animals and men were held here.

The marble seats where Caesar and his family sat.

The entire cell area was covered with wood flooring and then sand, because the sand made it easier to clean up the blood. *Shutter*

It was so hot that we bought an umbrella for Vienna to keep the sun off of her... Isn't she cute!?
